mesmerizing London show, Motown the Musical is about the real saga of Motown
Records. The show is a complete jukebox musical featuring 40 hits such as “My
Girl”, “Heard it Through the Grapevine” “I Want You Back”, “Signed, Sealed,
Delivered I’m Yours” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”.
The popular London show is
adapted from a book by Berry Gordy Jr. who is also the founder of Motown. It is
adapted from the 1994 autobiography. The story is about the foundation of the
Motown record label as well as his life long relationships with several stars
such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The
Temptations. The show also features an ensemble cast of 40 performers and
starts in the year 1983. Motown The Musical starts with the silver jubilee
celebration of Motown records and takes back to Berry Gordy as a young boy in
Detroit, Michigan. The show depicts his
early life to the foundation of label.
The popular Motown Records derived
its name with collaboration of two words Motor and Town. The record label is
known for pop infused soul sound. The popular record label Motown attained huge
success with 79 records in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 chart from 1960
to 1969. The Motown sound has transformed the music industry forever and still
has lots of influence of modern music.
Under the superb direction of Charles
Randolph-Wright, Broadway production was a huge success and was nominated for
four Tony Awards. On April 2013, the popular show made its debut at the
Lunt-Fontanne Theatre whereas closed in January 2015. The show also enjoyed
successful tour of USA before making its debut in London. The popular show is
running with houseful shows at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre after Memphis
starring Beverley Knight.
